Data Monday: Behind the Android

While Google's mobile operating system, Android, continues to gain smartphone market share. There's are more interesting stories happening behind the scenes.

  • About 36 million Android devices shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2011 and Android's worldwide smartphone market share reached 36% more than triple its share at the start of 2010. (source)
  • Microsoft gets $5 for every HTC phone running Android thanks to a patent settlement with HTC over intellectual property infringement. HTC shipped about 30 million Android devices which adds up to $150 million for Microsoft. Microsoft Windows Phone revenues to date are $30 million. So Microsoft has received five times more income from Android than from Windows Phone. (source)
  • In the first three quarters of 2010, 10 million new Android devices created a gain of about 9% in browsing share. In the same quarter, 14.8 million iOS devices created about 37% gain in browsing share. (source)
  • There are nearly three times as many paid apps on Apple's App Store (211,369 as on Google's Android Market (71,801). (source)
  • In the Google Android Market, 24.8% of all free applications have been downloaded less than 100 times and 79.3% of paid applications that have been downloaded less than 100 times worldwide. (source)
  • In the Google Android Market only two paid applications have exceeded more than 500,000 downloads (but under 1 million) worldwide to date. In March and April together, six paid applications have generated more than 500,000 downloads each in just the United States in the Apple App Store for iPhone. (source)
  • There are five games in Google Android Market with over 250,000 downloads worldwide. In the Apple App Store for iPhone ten games generated more than 250,000 downloads in the United States alone in two months. (source)
