How can one designer produce the work of a whole team?

A big chunk of what used to make design a "team" activity was waiting. PMs waited on designers for mockups, designers waited on developers for code, developers waited on PMs for requirements. AI tools are collapsing those handoffs, so each role can produce work that used to depend on someone else.

But what makes one designer as productive as a team isn't just generating more stuff. When everybody can tell a model to make a candy-selling website, that output on its own is worth basically nothing. The leg up is knowing how to evaluate, tune, and improve what comes out. I've studied checkout forms for years, so when a model hands me a web form I can say "change this and this" and make it way better. Someone who's never thought about forms just says "great" and ships something that barely works. So the tools scale what you're already good at. They don't hand you the judgment.

That's why breadth matters so much. Back in 2013, it was already clear that though the number of skills required is increasing, the number of people on teams is decreasing. The economics in most companies don't support specialists. They need generalists. Etsy was a good early example: full stack designers who can do visual, interaction, and write code were called unicorns, but Etsy hired 25 of them so they can't be that rare. Today AI fills in the gaps in your skills, but you still need enough understanding across disciplines to know when the output is good.

There's a catch though. When everyone can ship, one design leader described letting everyone build and push whatever they wanted, and you could feel it in the product, because nothing made sense together. A solo designer works great in a startup, but once you're scaling something with an interface that needs to be maintained and has users on it, you can't just go off and code something up and put it in.

One way through that: bake the design system into the AI tools, let developers bake in frameworks and deployment rules, and then what anybody produces comes out more unified. In other words, your judgment gets encoded once and applied everywhere.

So if you want to be a design team of one, sharpen your taste in the areas you know deeply, get conversant in the ones you don't, and put your standards into the system so they scale beyond what you personally touch.
