| Geology of Mars Web
Design
Completed: April 2001
The goal of the Geology of Mars web project was to educate high school
students about the various geological processes that shaped the surface
of the planet Mars. The site had to present the content in a style that
would encourage teenagers to explore the information and provide interactive
features that allowed students to respond to questions and comments
about Martian geology posed by their teachers and peers.
LukeW solution:
The Geology of Mars home page presents the geological processes on Mars
in a highly visual manner. Instead of text-based navigation choices,
students see the visual representations of the processes on a model
of the actual Martian surface. This gives students a sense of the type
of physical features associated with each process, and provides a more
enjoyable form of interaction with the content. Martian spacecraft icons
and planetary objects within the discussion system work similarly to
encourage students to respond to questions and advance their status
with unique visual representations of their standing.
