NCSA Open Portal Interface
Environment
Completed: January 2001
The National Computational Science Alliance and its partner institutions
needed an environment in which multiple web resources could interact
and be organized. The goal was to create a "virtual workplace"
for the research scientists, staff users, and high performance computing
users that make up the Alliance. This workplace needed to be highly
customizable to accommodate the differing needs of these various groups.
LukeW solution:
The Open Portal Interface Environment (OPIE) interface is composed of
separate dynamic windows (called "nodes" in OPIE) for individual
tools. Nodes can be resized, minimized, moved, and spawned into their
own working environment. Nodes are also custom generated. That is their
content, name and visual identity (in this case, an icon) can be determined
on the fly by a user. This allows users to create several working environments
that can be saved as "views", which are accessible from the
toolbar at the top of the display.
Due to its dynamic nature, OPIE can be applied to many different web
based application systems, and can even be used as an environment to
transfer existing applications to the web. For more information on OPIE's
advantages, read the paper: Web-Based
Information Management: An Open Portal Interface Solution.
