Jean-luc Doumont's high-level overview to Understanding Visual Communication outlines three laws of effective communication.

Adapt to your audience and purpose, Maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, and Use effective redundancy. He also points out the strengths and limitations of visual "codings" and some concepts for choosing and optimizing visual representations. Though the presentation is a bit simplistic, it does a nice job of describing the "big picture".
